Once upon a time there was a playboy ? and also a gentleman, an art collector, documentary filmmaker, sportsman, high-tech enthusiast, a charmer and worshipper of women: Gunter Sachs.
This connoisseur of the arts and lover of diversity would surely have been a fan of wavemusic. And so it is that wavemusic Volume 18 turned into a sound-and-vision tribute to Gunter Sachs. Designed with photos taken professionally by Sachs as well as pictures from his private life, a world opens up that is full of freedom, lightness and aesthetic appeal.
The variey of songs is very much in the wavemusic tradition: timeless songs from the worlds of Pop, Jazz and Soul mixed together to form a perfect cocktail. This edition boasts an especially exquisite harmony of different styles. Keziah Jones? Reggae-Pop hit ?Rhythm is Love? is accompanied by New Zealand Dub-Soul formation Fat Freddy?s Drop and Berlin Jazz songstress Céline Rudolph. Also on board are guitar supremo George Benson (featured for the first time on a wavemusic compilation), demonstrating that he?s still a master of his art, plus Italian romantic dreamer Nicola Conte swinging along with his Hippie-Jazz sound.
Among the other highlights on CD 1 are Bobby McFerrin, which is joined on ?Say Ladeo? by a virtual choir comprising 1,400 vocal tracks, plus the dreamy chanson ?La Madrague? by Brigitte Bardot. Then, of course, there?s a brand-new song from Acid-Jazz legends Incognito and the yearning ballad ?The Person I Should Have Been? by fellow-Brit James Morrison. The journey is finely rounded off by Khari Simmons feat. India.Arie and Simply Red?s acoustic version of ?Holding Back the Years?.
